SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER 2024

Dear Supporter,

We bring exciting news of our participation in the Wokingham Arts Trail on the 21st and 22nd of September.

This year, 29 artists and makers are opening their studios or local spaces to welcome you in. Many will be demonstrating their skills and are excited to chat about their art. Why not pop by, enjoy a cuppa and a slice of cake while discovering some incredible creativity?

Arts4Wokingham will be exhibiting at Old Kiln Yard, Shute End, Wokingham, RG40 1BJ. Look for our signs opposite the Queens Head. We will feature:

  • Paintings produced in a workshop organised in collaboration with PACT (see below)

  • Contributions from supporting artists

  • Workshops by Jo Wyles and Deborah Pope

  • The story of Arts4Wokingham and a maquette of our project "The Arc" by Nicola Anthony

Please drop in and say hello.

Collaboration with PACT

Arts4Wokingham are delighted to be collaborating with PACT - Parents And Children Together - an adoption charity and family support provider helping hundreds of families every year through outstanding adoption and adoption support services and community projects across London and the south of England.

Our first project was a creative workshop for children and parents run by local artist Deborah Pope. The artworks created will be exhibited at our Wokingham Arts Trail venue (see above).

The Arc Maquette

One of the items on display at our Arts Trail venue will be a new maquette of "The Arc"by Nicola Anthony, our project for a public sculpture outside the Carnival Hub.

We are still busy raising funds and would be grateful for any donations towards this important initiative.

We are very grateful to Wokingham Men's Shed who made a lovely perspex cover for the maquette.

Charity Gala Screening - "Blind Terror" also released as "See no Evil"

Want to see intriguing images and cinematic sequences of Wokingham as it was in the 70’s? Then this film is not to be missed. A unique gala screening will take place on Monday, November 11th at 7.30pm at The Whitty Theatre, Wokingham RG40 3EU. This movie was shot in and around Wokingham in 1970 and released in 1971. Eagle eyed viewers will see glimpses of the old red brick Victorian railway station, a tantalising stroll down Denmark Street and a psychopath’s unnerving gaze from The Red Lion looking out onto Market Place and much, much more.

As well as offering a unique early 70’s insight into familiar locations captured by director, Richard Fleischer, the film has been dubbed as ‘a perfect modern specimen of the A plus suspense programmer…superbly written…brilliantly photographed’. Starring Mia Farrow and a very youthful Paul Nicholas, a crazed killer stalks his blind victim in sequences captured at the family home in Binfield.

This special fundraiser screening will be preceded by an illuminating introduction by John Gibbs, Professor of Film at the University of Reading.

To make sure of a seat at this one-off event, bookings will open via http://www.ticketsource.co.uk/arts4wokingham on Monday 16th September. Although there is no fixed charge, Arts4Wokingham is suggesting that purchasers make a £7.00 contribution for each seat required. Since this is a charity fundraiser, we are hoping that those attending might decide to add a few extra pounds as an additional donation. Every few pounds counts to progress Arts4Wokingham’s aim to promote more public art throughout the borough.

Arts4Wokingham would like to offer their sincere thanks to The Whitty Theatre and Wokingham Film Society for their support and patronage in making this event possible
