A Run In To Remember - The Brighton Marathon 2024

On Sunday 7th April, 4 plucky runners took on the daunting task of running 26.2 miles in the Brighton Marathon to raise funds for Arts4Wokingham. Last week Strictly Come Dancing Star, Ian Waite, ran a private class to help them with a few physical tips to make sure that they would be able to stay the course. But just how did they get on?

It was a tough race day with strong winds and unexpected warmth. The runners needed all their resources to stay the 26.2 mile course. Ian Waite’s bespoke exercise class, which he ran last week, seemed to work wonders. Remarkably, Anne Reece and Stuart Ratcliff both crossed the line in an identical time of 5 hours, 47minutes and 32 seconds. Anne said, ‘I’m now looking forwarded to a well-earned rest and a large gin and tonic! That was a real challenge but I’m thrilled that Stuart and I could embrace it together, crossing the line as one. It was the Arts4Wokingham vest that drove us on.’

Meanwhile, Arts4Wokingham runner Alex Prideaux brought in the fastest time at 4 hours, 25 minutes and 15 seconds. Alex said, ‘The second half of the race was a nightmare, too warm and I didn’t drink enough. Still, a plentiful supply of orange segments from supporters did the trick. It was a staggering field of some 20 thousand runners. I was so glad to be able to support Arts4Wokingham.’

Basingstoke resident, Amanda Oxlade-Gotobed, called upon sheer determination and stamina to get her through. Finishing in 7 hours, 19 minutes and 36 seconds her achievement was a personal triumph. Battling fibromyalgia gave her a high pain score but by chatting with fellow runners and calling upon sheer stubbornness, she finished the race in style. Amanda said, ‘I was inspired by seeing Paula Radcliffe on the start line and simply focussed on making it to the end. By the time I finished, I literally couldn’t walk and just avoided a massive blister. But I wasn’t about to let Arts4Wokingham down.’

They are all heroes. What a public spirited challenge to take on in the cause of public art!

We remain keen to hear from any local businesses who would be interested in supporting both the installation of  the stunning Nicola Anthony sculpture, The Arc, outside Wokingham’s Carnival Hub, or more public art to distinguish Wokingham borough
